Glory to God

Our Heart, His Home Advent Devotional Day 14

Suddenly, a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests.” Luke 2:13-14 NIV

Why did a great company of heavenly hosts join the angel messenger? To praise God for the birth of Jesus. That is quite the birth announcement. There was no photo card to family and friends in the mail, not a phone call or social media post. No, this baby’s birth brought down the angels from heaven.

We see in Revelation that the heavenly hosts, or angels, dwell in heaven where they constantly worship God. (Revelation 7:11) The Bible includes plenty of accounts of an angel messenger coming to earth, but Jesus’ birth is the only time we see a group of angels leaving heaven to praise God from the earth.

Jesus’ birth was so significant it warranted an army of angels. I don’t want to miss that. I want to read the story of Jesus’ birth with fresh eyes and allow its implications to renew my heart. His birth impacts every detail of our lives, not only at Christmas but for eternity. Hope, Joy, Peace, Love, Light, Salvation — the list of privileges He gives each of us is immeasurable.

What does it look like for us to spend our days giving glory to God for all He has done? We spend more time in conversation, praising God for what He has done in our lives. We choose praise music to accompany ordinary tasks and car rides. We carefully consider our words and actions so that we honor Him. We use our lives to serve others and build His kingdom.

Just like the angels, understanding the privileges we have in Jesus should prompt us to give God endless praise. Giving glory to God is the only appropriate response to the incredible gift of Jesus. As we live our days on earth, let us fill them with praise to God for all He has done for us.

Father, some days I forget the gift I have in Jesus. Give me fresh eyes and renew my heart; I want my life to give you glory. Amen.
